The World No 1 hit back after losing the opening set to beat last year’s runner-up, Dutchman Danny Noppert, 4-1.McGeeney progressed at the Lakeside Country Club with finishes of 160, 120 and 127.The second of those played a big part in the direction of the match as it saw McGeeney move 2-1 up and he won the next two sets 3-2 to reach the last eight.Noppert was unseeded despite his feats from 12 months ago and on the way to taking.
Romford thrower Daniel Day suffered a 3-1 defeat against 14th seed Martin Phillips in the first round of the BDO World Darts Championship.The first set went with throw, with Day taking the crucial decider to gain the all-important early advantage.With an average of 87.24 at that stage, hopes were running high that Day could cause an upset and beat Phillips, who had previously reached two semi-finals at the World Championship.
The Welshman missed set darts in both the third and fourth legs, before finally taking the chance by breaking Day in the fifth to lead.Now having to chase a game for the first time in the tournament, Day was broken again in the second leg of the fourth set.The Romford local showed plenty of fight, battling back to ensure the set went to the last leg.
